The legendary greek band Αντί... formed around 1984 in Athens, Greece. Their music can be characterized as synth punk made by two harmoniums, one bass and one drum machine, dressed with social, reactionary lyrics that intend to inform, to remind, to warn and although they are romantic or naive, they are pure and still timely, more than ever. What a pity that only people who speak the greek language can understand them.

Here we have the songs from their first self-released demo cassette from 1985 and one unreleased track called "Τελευταία Μπύρα". The LP pressed in 500 handnumbered copies that will be released the next days, but they are already sold out from the pre-orders!

Fuckin' brilliant sound, highly recommended!

Κοινωνική Ασυμφωνία (Social Disagreement) was a punk band formed in November of 1999 in Serres, Greece. They released "Echo Of Disaster" CD in 1999 and appeared on the "When The Exploitation.." compilation with two songs.

Yesterday, 10 years completed since 7/11/2001, when their singer Takis was killed in a car accident. That was when the band split-up.

British Troops Shoot Londonderry Rioters (1971)

The picture above was taken by the photographer Don McCullin, who is particularly recognized for his war photography and images of urban strife. That was back in 1971 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland when two men killed by the British Army.

Some of the worst violence in the town for three years flared up that afternoon when a crowd of 200 gathered in Lecky Street at the news of an army shooting earlier in the day.

Welder and former boxer Seamus Cusack, 28, died in Letterkenny District Hospital of a gunshot wound. Troops opened fire, initially with rubber bullets and CS gas, but they failed to disperse the crowd. The rioters retaliated by throwing three nail bombs. The army returned fire. One man was shot in the stomach and five soldiers are reported to have been injured by the missiles. The man was dead on arrival at hospital. He was identified as 19-year-old George Desmond Beattie of Donegal Street, Bogside.

There was a lull in the violence after Mr Beattie had been shot and a group of factory girls marched in silence through the area carrying black bags.

This picture was used by Killing Joke for the cover of their debut album in 1980.

In 1976, Yves Kengen had just left the lengendary Bastard and decided to form his own new act. That's when Raxola formed. Much appreciated for their rough pop punk songs and their somewhat socially and politically committed lyrics. They went on a series of gigs and tours with The Kids, The Jam and many others.

Crude SS - The System That You Hate...Is The System You Support

Crude S.S. first surfaced in Sweden in the summer of 1982 with their self-released demo. The "S.S." on their name stands for "Society System". They fit in well with the established lot of Swedish hardcore punk of that era. Although their sound was somewhat unique and a bit different from the likes of Anti Cimex, Crudity, Disarm, etc. Always raw, shifting from slow and sludgey to fast and aggressive, coarse vocals and unrefined anger defined the their sound.

They have definitely earned an eternal name for themselves among the international DIY hardcore punk community and have served as siginificant influence for countless bands from all corners of the globe. They propably disbanded around 1986, the year that released the last official compilation album that they appeared on.

With very little available or even existant, in terms of official releases, they are easily one of the most bootlegged bands in international hardcore punk history next to the likes of Mob 47 from Sweden and Confuse from Japan.

Here we have their great "Who'll Survive" EP from 1983, compilation tracks and one live track. Enjoy!

Moderat Likvidation - Never Mind The Bootlegs... Here's The Real Deal

Moderat Likvidation (Moderate liquidation in english) is a swedish hardcore punk band that formed sometime back in 1980 in the suburbs of Malmö in south of the country. The band originally existed between 1980 and 1985, but reunited in 2007. The word "moderate" in the band name refers to the swedish conservative Moderate Party. Members of the band played also for other bands like Black Uniforms, Hjärnsubstans, R.P Savoy.

I should tell you that "Köttahuve" (Meathead) is an anti-nazi song. According to hearsay, the song reached the ears of Dead Kennedys' singer Jello Biafra and that he banned Moderat Likvidation for being Nazis because of the lines "Sieg Heil" in the chorus. But the lyrics are ironic.

There was also a gig in Helsingborg where a bunch of nazi-skinheads showed up and wanted to discuss the song "Köttahuve", which was all about…naziskins. This "discussion" took place in a dark alley after the gig. However, when one member of the band started waving with a Magnum 44 they didn´t wanna "talk" anymore but ran away. They didn't know it was a plugged gun. There was a story about this incident in a local paper, and nobody knew how it got there!? But the outcome was to the punk-rockers satisfaction, cause there were less incidents like this afterwards.

Here we have their 1983 EP, their demo tape from the same year and swedish national radio session. Raw and powerful music!

A Tribute To Malcolm Owen

Like today, on July 14th 1980, Malcolm Owen, lead singer of The Ruts, was found dead from heroin overdose in the bathroom of his parents' house. He was 26 years old.

Malcolm was a charismatic frontman with brilliant voice and his death was a major blow.

He was heroin user before The Ruts and turned back to it after his wife left him. The irony is that "H-eye" is a song against heroin use. "Dope For Guns" and "Love In Vein (don't want you in my arms no more)" are also anti-drug songs.

In 1981 The Damned wrote a song called "The Limit Club", about their deceased friend which mentions the "velvet claws" that Fox talked about with reference to Owen's heroin addiction.

R.I.P. Würzel

Michael Burston (23 October 1949 – 9 July 2011) commonly known by the stage name Würzel, was an english musician and formerly a guitarist of Motörhead from 1984 until 1995. He also had played in the bands Bastard and Warfare.

He died on 9 July 2011. The cause of death was ventricular fibrillation triggered by cardiomyopathy.

Lemmy said: "Wurzel was my friend and my brother and he's never going to laugh with me again or bitch me out or do….anything. And that truly and cosmically SUCKS."

Moskwa - Nigdy!

Moskwa (Moscow in polish) formed in 1983 in Lodz of Poland, a dirty town covered with smoke of the factory chimneys. They are one of the most charismatic punk bands of the Eastern Europe.

Because of the communist censorship, Polish official media refused to call the band "Moskwa", choosing less "dangerous" names of "M-kwa", or the like. Of course the fans knew who was meant by this, and the band themselves never changed their name.

This is their demo recorded in 1986 and released on CD in 2005.

Dezerter - Kolaboracja

Dezerter originally founded as SS-20 in May of 1981 in Warsaw, Poland and is one of the most popular punk bands in the country.

SS-20 was a secret weapon, a nuclear missile designed by the USSR and by the beginning of 1983 they had to change their original name to Dezerter because of the reaction of the communist authorities. To become less recognizable by regime they often changed name at posters, sometimes written as "De-zerter", sometimes as "The Zerter" - it was cheap and efficient trick to cheat an opponent.

In 1987, they recorded their first professional studio LP called "Kolaboracja".

Holiday in Cambodia

The lifeless body of a hanged student outside Thammasat University, Bangkok, Thailand (1976).

The Massacre of 6 October 1976, was an attack on students and protesters that occurred on the campus of Thammasat University and at Sanam Luang in Bangkok. Students from various universities were demonstrating against the return to Thailand of Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn, a former military ruler. By the official count, fourty-six people (maybe hunderds) died and in the attack, during which protesters were shot, beaten and their bodies mutilated. Thousands were arrested.

Associated Press photographer Neal Ulevich covered the Vietnam War for five years. But nothing he saw in the jungle prepared him for the morning of Oct. 6, when right-wing students attack left-wing students near the university. "When I got there, it was getting more and more violent. Paramilitary troops heavily armed with recoilless rifles showed up. The left-wing students were not armed and were not shooting back. They took refuge in the university buildings.

"Tremendous volleys of automatic weapons were fired across the soccer fields into the classrooms. There were bodies all over, glass breaking. There was no place to take cover. I was very scared."

Finally, the left-wing students surrender. Ulevich heads for the gates, anxious to get his pictures back to his office. "I saw some commotion in the trees. I walked down there and I saw a body hanging. He was certainly dead, but the crowd was so enraged that a man was hitting the body on the head with a folding chair. I stood there to see if anybody was looking at me. Nobody was. I took a few frames and walked away." That was when the picture of the post had taken. The photographer won the Pulitzer prize in 1977 for this photograph.

In the end, an irony, as Neal Ulevich says: "When I won the Pulitzer, the Bangkok papers noted it on Page One. They were very proud that a photographer from Bangkok had won the Pulitzer. They didn't show the pictures."

Dead Kennedys use this photo for their second single called "Holiday in Cambodia" that released in May 1980. The title track attacks both Eastern totalitarianism and Western complacency. The song's lyrics offer a satirical view of young, self-righteous Americans (So you been to school/For a year or two/And you know you’ve seen it all/In daddy’s car/Thinkin’ you’ll go far...) and contrast such a lifestyle with a brutal depiction of the Pol Pot regime of Cambodia (Well you’ll work harder/With a gun in your back/For a bowl of rice a day/Slave for soldiers/Till you starve/Then your head is skewered on a stake).

London Calling

The photographer Pennie Smith took a picture of Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision bass against the stage at The Palladium in New York City on 21 September 1979, during the "Clash Take the Fifth" US tour of The Clash.

The photograph went on to be used on the cover of the their "London Calling" album, but the photographer originally did not want the photograph to be used. She thought that it was too out of focus, but Joe Strummer and the graphic designer thought it would make a good album cover. In 2002, Smith's photograph received Q magazine’s "Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Photograph of All-Time" award in 2002, commenting that "it captures the ultimate rock'n'roll moment - total loss of control".

The cover artwork was designed by Ray Lowry and was a homage to the design of Elvis Presley's debut album. The cover named the ninth best album cover of all time by Q magazine in 2001.

KSU - 1988 - Pod prad

KSU is one of the oldest and most influential polish punk rock bands, founded in 1977 in the southeastern town of Ustrzyki Dolne (in the Bieszczady Mountains). In the beginning they were playing covers of bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Later in 1978 came up with the name KSU, which comes from the three letters from car licence plates of that region. With new name came new music and they started playing punk rock inspired by Sex Pistols, Damned, Wire and U.K. Subs.

In 1988 they recorded "Pod Prąd" (Against The Flow). Enoy!

The Game is (still) not fair..

Many people died and still dying by famine in Uganda.

Taken in Karamoja district, Uganda in April 1980, by the photographer Mike Wells, the picture above shows the contrasting hands of a starving boy and a missionary spoke louder than any world leader and any news story about the famine in Uganda. Karamoja region has the driest climate in Uganda and was prone to droughts. The 1980 famine in there where 21% of the population (and 60% of the infants) died was one of the worst in history. The worst recorded famine was the great Finn famine (1696), which killed a third of the population.

The photographer, who would later win the World Press Photo Award for this photo, admitted that he was ashamed to take the photo. The same publication that sat on his picture for five months without publishing it entered it into a competition. He was embarrassed to win as he never entered the competition himself, and was against winning prizes with pictures of people starving to death.

Famine, drought and ethnic violence go on until nowdays in Karamoja. The Karamojong are a nomadic people, but since Idi Amin years in the 1970s, their nomadic patterns were curtailed due to the increase of cross border security, internal raids, and influx of weapons which enabled them to lead raids.

Bangladesh Atrocities (1971)

During the Bangladesh atrocities from 1971.

The photo above was taken by Don McCullin during Bangladesh atrocities that started with Operation Searchlight on 25 March 1971 and continuing throughout the Bangladesh Liberation War. There were widespread violations of human rights in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) perpetrated by the West Pakistan Army with support from local political and religious militias. "Time" magazine reported a high U.S. official as saying "It is the most incredible, calculated thing since the days of the Nazis in Poland."

Bangladeshi authorities claim that 3 million people were killed. The international media and reference books in English have also published figures which vary greatly from 200,000 to 3,000,000 for Bangladesh as a whole. A further eight to ten million people fled the country to seek safety in India.

There are many mass graves in Bangladesh, and more are continually being discovered. The first night of war on Bengalis, which is documented in telegrams from the American Consulate in Dhaka to the United States State Department, saw indiscriminate killings of students of Dhaka University and other civilians.

Numerous women were raped, tortured and killed during the war. The exact numbers are not known and are a subject of debate with some sources quoting figures as high as 400,000. One of the more horrible revelations concerns 563 young Bengali women, some only 18, who were held captive inside Dhaka's dingy military cantonment since the first days of the fighting. They were seized from Dhaka University and private homes and forced into military brothels, with some of the women carrying war babies being released.

The band started in 1978 in Paris, then split and became the second formation in 1980 (they played excusively in squats and had many names (Torture mentale) & often with the name Berurier Into. The name "Berurier" is based on a caracter of the french books “San Antonio”.

Some members had alcohol, drugs, suicidal problems, problems with cops, army, etc and in December 1982 the band was only formed by Francois and Loran (replacing Olaf at guitar). The Berurier decide to make a final concert as a tribute. They called themself Bérurier Noir (black) for the mourning. This is where the 3rd formation really beginned, under the encouragement of the public to continue (a part of this show was also released over “2 concerts a Paris”). This last formation played from 1983 to 1989, in many countries over many continents. They also created their own record company called “Folklore de la zone mondiale”. This really was a skin/punk movement and they played with great bands in festivals like Subhumans, The Damned, Ludwig Von 88, La Sourie Déglingué, Wampas, OTH, etc.

One of the great things about them was that they supported some great movements over their life. Anti-Racist actions, Non-profit and non-government organizations to help rescue boat people, fight against sexual agressions, unionism, etc. The amount of actions they supported is really huge.

Their music was clearly derived from British punk rock as far as music and lyrics were concerned. Most of their songs were short, aggressive and usually based on a couple of basic power chords. Their lyrics reflected the typical concerns of punks such as the rejection of consumerism, politics and traditional social order and the anger felt by disaffected youth, tramps and outsiders in general.

They added some interesting innovations. Their rhythm section consisted of a cheap (but still more reliable than a drummer) drum machine, which became an essential and arguably endearing part of their sound. The frequent use of a saxophone as of the mid-eighties also set them apart from most other punk rock bands.

They would regularly appear on record sleeves and on stage wearing clown outfits, mock police uniforms or pig masks. Their shows were a unique and highly festive cross between a punk rock concert, a grotesque circus and an anarchist rally.

A cult band, Bérurier Noir were loved by a generation of youth and feared by concert organisers for the riots that followed their shows.

During a Fire Escape Collapse in Boston, U.S.A. (1975)

On July 22, 1975, photograph Stanley J. Forman working for the Boston Herald American newspaper when a police scanner picked up an emergency: “Fire on Marlborough Street!”
Climbed on a fire truck, Forman shot the picture of Diana Bryant (19 years old) and her goddaughter, Tiare Jones (2 years old) when they fell helplessly. Diana Bryant was pronounced dead at the scene. The young girl lived. Despite a heroic effort, the fireman who tried to grab them had been just seconds away from saving the lives of both.

Photo coverage from the tragic event garnered Stanley Forman a Pulitzer Prize. But more important, his work paved the way for Boston and other states to mandate tougher fire safety codes.

The German post-punk band Abwärts use this photo for the cover of their first album "Amok Koma" back in 1980.

The picture above was taken by the famous photographer Diane Arbus. It shows a boy*, with the left strap of his jumper awkwardly hanging off his shoulder, tensely holding his long, thin arms by his side. Clenched in his right hand is a toy grenade, and his left hand is held in a claw-like gesture; his facial expression is maniacal. Arbus captured this photograph by having the boy stand while moving around him, claiming she was trying to find the right angle. The boy became impatient and told her to "Take the picture already!" His expression conveys his exasperation and impatience with the whole endeavor, as the contact sheet for the shoot reveals. In other pictures, he is seen as a happy child.

The photograph was used, without permission, on the first version of the cover of the debut LP ".. And No One Else Wanted To Play" by Canadian punk band S.N.F.U. in 1984, and had to be replaced with drawing in subsequent editions because of copyright infringement.

The image is also used on the cover of American indie rock band Cloud Cult's debut album "Who Killed Puck?" and on the cover of the sametitled EP from 1984 of the hardcore/punk band from Netherlands called No Pigs.

An original print of the photograph sold for $408,000 in April 2005.

* The boy in the photograph is Colin Wood, son of tennis player Sidney Wood. An interview with Colin, with his recollections about Arbus taking this photograph, is presented in the BBC documentary "The Genius of Photography".

In 1984 the greek newspapers of the time discover the "new enemy within". The Punks.

The occasion were the incidents that took place out of the Α.Σ.Ο.Ε.Ε. (High School of Economics and Commercial Sciences) in the centre of Athens, because the live solidarity concert that was going to take place for the anarchists that were in prison that time, cancelled by members of Κ.Ν.Ε. (Communist Youth of Greece).

The next day the articles of the press essentially heralding the attacks that would follow by the police and the goverment to the Exarchia Square's youth with the famous "virtue operations" (επιχειρήσεις αρετής).

"And now the...Sioux. Exarchia; after the drugs and anarchists, punks came with the shaved heads", the title of a terrorlust article of a newspaper in 14th of September 1984."...with the hair cut like a brush, usually dyed with different colours, scaring the elderly, throwing beer bottles and pissing anywhere".

Generation X (also known as Gen X) originally formed in 1976 in London, England by three ex-Chelsea members. They played their first gig on 21 December 1976 at Roxy club (becoming one of the very first punk bands to play at the venue). They were one of the first punk bands to play at BBC music programme Top Of The Pops.

Unlike the other punk bands, they ignored some of the "rules" and "ideals" adopted by UK punk bands, taking inspiration of British pop of the 60's.

Their singer Billy Idol is better known from his later pop period.

The Mob were formed in Yeovil, Somerset, England, in 1979, just as the UK anarcho-punk scene was taking shape.

From out in the dark hills this group arrived at an extreme and unique sound: they were menacing and brooding, with extremely dark music and words with none of speed or spectacle of their contemporaries.

They played the infamous Zig Zag squat gig with Crass in 1982 and they broke up after playing their last show in November of 1983 at the Doncaster Co-op Hall.

M.I.A. - Lost Boys

M.I.A. was a punk band from Orange County, California and they were formed in the early 80's. Their music were influenced by The Sex Pistols, The Damned, Buzzcocks, Ramones, The Decline, Circle Jerks , Germs, Black Flag , T.S.O.L and others.

In 1984 they signed a deal with Alternative Tentacles label, after the label's founder and Dead Kennedys' frontman Jello Biafra, saw them play at a secret illegal punk nightclub in Las Vegas.

In 2001 "Lost Boys" released, which is a 37-song retrospective of the band's work, including "Last Rites" split LP (1982), "Murder in a foreign place" LP (1984) and several additional tracks.

Reduction in salaries and pensions, increases in tickets for the public transportation, unemployment, privitizations and clearance sale of the public property - among other reasons - led people to resist, because the future is inauspicious.

Around 100.000 workers, pensioners and students marched to protest austerity policies and they clashed with the cops, when they tried to disperse them.

The Last Drive - Their Story...So far

The Last Drive started playing in late 1983 in Athens, Greece. They're playing basically garage rock mixed with rockabilly and surf-rock.

In the spring of 1987 they toured abroad for the first time in Germany, Italy, France and Netherlands. They performed along with The Fuzztones, The Creeps, The Stomachmouths and others.

They have personal sound, which is a mixture of punk, hardcore and metal along with melodic elements. Very tight band and it's a shame that they are not well-known.

In 1988 they toured Europe for the first time and performed live in Norway, Germany and Italy.

Dead Man's Shadow formed back in 1980. "The 4P's" is their debut album, recorded during Xmas of 1982 , and released in April 1983.

The band's debut sounds understandably basic compared to what would follow, but still shows how they had optimism and defiance during those anti-nuke days, with the bitter realities of life slammed out in insistent songs.

They were constantly champing at the bit to do more, to explore more sounds, to bring out even more heart in the lyrics and singing. This was passionate band who were openly scornful in the press of what they saw happening in Punk, which only helped to sideline them still further for having the nerve to be themselves.

B.G.K. (stands for Balthasar Gerards Kommando) were a 1980s Dutch punk band.

The band were named after a Dutch historical figure named Balthasar Gerards, who assassinated the king of the Netherlands in 1584. Balthasar Gerards Kommando were formed in the early 1980s by members of Amsterdam punk band The Nitwitz.

Rejecting the then-popular trend to emulate British Oi bands, BGK took their musical cues from American hardcore bands such as MDC, and soon developed an ultrafast style of their own. The band was also committed to following through with its leftist political stance, both in terms of the punk scene (the band set up DIY shows with low door prices, and put out affordable records on their own label) and in a wider political spectrum (they often played benefits for various causes, and helped run the Emma squat in Holland).

Eater - The Compleat Eater

Eater were an early British punk band from London. The band was formed in 1976 by four high school friends. Their name came from the song "Suneye" performed by T.Rex.

Despite originating in north London, the band made its first public performance in Manchester, featuring The Buzzcocks as their support act. Eater’s live set at this gig, back in November 1976, was built mainly around speeded-up versions of Velvet Underground and David Bowie songs such as "Queen Bitch" and "Sweet Jane".

Closer to home, the band became one of the pioneering punk bands that played live in the first few months of the now-legendary Roxy Club. They topped the bill twice in January 1977, the second time they were supported by The Damned. They headlined again in February, this time supported by Johnny Moped, and twice more in March, supported first by The Lurkers and then by Sham 69.

The Razor Blades formed by two teenage brothers near the smalltown of Glamsbjerg on the island of Funen in Denmark in September of 1979. From the beginning the band played 70's style punk rock, but gradually was speeded up and the attitudes became more aggressive.

They were also involved in the first squattings that took place in Odense in the beginning of the 80's, very much inspired by the ones in London, Berlin and Copenhagen.

Here we have all their stuff and live recordings from 1983.

The Nils was a Canadian power-pop punk-rock band originating in Montreal, Quebec which produced several releases between 1978 and 1994.

The band was founded in 1978 by then 12-year old Alex Soria (1966-2004) with his brother Carlos Soria. The band never achieved widespread fame despite critical success and a following amongst other musicians in the genre. Their sound is said to be influenced by the likes of The Replacements and Husker Du. The band also took influences from Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Damned. Many famous bands loved the Nils or were directly influenced by them.

Very underrated band with a fuckin' good sound! Get it!

Siekiera started in 1982 in Pulawy, Poland under the name "Trafo". In 1983 they changed their name to Siekiera. They were one of the most popular punk rock bands with aggressive and fast sound. After changes in the line-up, the band switched to new wave.

This is their debut LP called "Nowa Aleksandria" influenced mainly from Killing Joke. It is appraised as one of the greatest Polish albums.

Rosemary's Babies formed in 1981 in Lodi, New Jersey and they featured Eerie Von (bassist for Danzig and Samhain) on drums. Some of the members were high school classmates of Misfits' guitarist Doyle.

The band's early musical influences included The Misfits, and DC bands such as Minor Threat, The Bad Brains, and State of Alert (featuring vocalist Henry Rollins) as well as bands like Blitz, Charged GBH and Discharge. Other stylistic influences include films such as A Clockwork Orange and Caligula.

Here we have their EP "Bloodlust", previously unreleased songs, and tracks recorded live at CBGBs NYC May 15, 1983. That year they split-up.

Fast and aggressive hardcore/punk sound from the early 80's. Play it loud!

Anti Cimex were a Swedish hardcore punk band, based in Skövde, Göteborg, Linköping, and Malmo, at different times, that formed in 1981.

They were one of the first bands to define Scandinavian hardcore punk. Their second 7", Raped Ass, is considered to be a subgenre-defining D-beat record.

Their name is taken from the Swedish pest control company with the same name, the name of this company, in turn, comes from the Latin name of a particular type of bedbug; Cimex.
